Sherief Abdallah, PhD

Professor of Artificial Intelligence

Dr Sherief Abdallah is Professor at the British University in Dubai. He holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the United States. Dr Abdallah's research focuses on applying machine learning to real and novel problems, including mobile devices, network management, and information retrieval. He collaborated with world-class researchers in the United States, South America, and Europe. He worked on research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (USA), some of which involved hundred researchers from interdisciplinary areas.

Mohammed Awad

Associate Professor and Chairperson

Mohammed Awad joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the School of Engineering in the American University of Ras Al Khaimah in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE in 2013. Dr. Awad earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Houston in the United States in 2011. He earned a MSc in Computer Science at the same university in 2006. Dr. Awad’s research interests include machine learning, e-learning, CubeSats, and security, more specifically E-voting and I-voting security.

Sherif G. Aly

ABET Commissioner Professor and Chair

Sherif Aly is a professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, with significant industrial and governmental consultation experience. His prime research interests include the interdisciplinary aspect of mobile and pervasive computing. He served as the chair of the American University in Cairo (AUC) Council of information management, advising and reporting to the vice president of information management on issues of governance, technology and decision making.

The Challenge - Theoretical

Undergrads, Masters or PhD students must show how tech solutions, artificial intelligence and/or data science can be applied to improve the lives of UAE residents. Each participant must develop an idea that applies AI and Data Science technologies to one of the following themes: Happiness, Healthcare, Education, Future Mobility

First submission -
Open for registration 

Submit a maximum 2-minute video introducing your entry and addressing:

  • What is the problem the participant is looking at?
  • Why is solving the problem important for the UAE?
  • How can AI and/or Data Science technologies be used to solve the problem?
Shortlisted for mentorship 

All the submitted videos will be evaluated, then approximately 60-70% of entries will be shortlisted to move to round two, with the guidance of a mentor to refine and polish the entry in advance of the second submission.

Second submission –
Deadline 30th September

Shortlisted individuals must present a max 5-minute video, a project document (max 10 A4-pages) and a personal mission statement (max 300 words – under the title How will I change the world ).

  • Final submission should include what tech solutions (AI/Data Science etc) will be used to support the idea
  •  
  • Please mention name, university & second submission on the subject line when submitting the project. Click below button for submission
Final presentation at the event –
on 18th October, Ai Everything x GITEX at Dubai World Trade Centre

Shortlisted individuals from round two must make their final idea pitch on stage at the Ai Everything x GITEX event, in one of the main summit theatres

The Challenge - Technical

Undergrads, Masters or PhD students must work in teams of 2-4 to develop a mobile app using data from Bayanat, the official open source data portal of the UAE Government. The app must apply AI and data science technologies to improve lives of UAE residents, focusing around the themes of: Happiness, Healthcare, Education, Future Mobility.

First submission –
Open for registration

Teams must submit a maximum 2-minute video introducing your entry and addressing:

  • The idea for the mobile app
  • How the app will be using Bayanat data
  • How the proposed app will improve the lives of UAE residents
  • How the team members have the AI and Data Science skill to complete the project
Shortlisted for mentorship 

All the submitted videos will be evaluated, then shortlisted to move to round two with the guidance of a mentor to refine and polish the entry in advance of the second submission.

Second submission –
Deadline 30th September

Shortlisted teams must present a working prototype of the mobile app along with a max 5-minute video and a project document (max 10 A4-pages).
